Update about BinaxNOW COVID-19 home tests
In March, Governor DeWine made more than 200,000 BinaxNOW COVID-19 Home tests available to Educational Service Centers (ESCs) for distribution to schools and school districts throughout Ohio. Since then, schools and districts have reported making the tests available to:
Symptomatic students, teachers and staff;
Individuals in quarantine for release after seven days;
Individuals participating in extracurricular activities and events such as prom and graduation; and
Individuals participating in summer programming.
Rest assured Ohio has sufficient testing supplies to continue supporting schools and districts in their efforts to keep students, staff members and communities safe through at-home testing. Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved an extension of the expiration dates of the BinaxNOW Home tests for up to 12 months. This means tests previously distributed to Ohio schools have been approved for use through November 2021. As such, these home tests can be used as part of a safe back-to-school strategy for next school year. This is especially important to keep in mind as schools develop strategies in response to requirements of the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund. Including a plan for making at-home COVID-19 test kits available can be a strong component of these safe return-to-school strategies.
Schools are not limited to the number of tests they initially received. If your school or district needs tests, please contact your ESC to see if there are any tests available. If your ESC does not have available tests, contact the State Testing Team at TestingRequests@odh.ohio.gov. If you have tests that you do not intend to use in either this school year or next, please contact your ESC to see if the tests may be redistributed to another school or district.
