Licensure Renewal 2020
As a result of the ongoing coronavirus health crisis and in accordance with the passage of House Bill 404 of the 133rd General Assembly, the Ohio Department of Education is providing flexibility for educators to renew their licenses and permits previously set to expire July 1, 2020. All licenses and permits previously set to expire on July 1, 2020, will remain valid until July 1, 2021, to allow additional time for educators who need to complete requirements for renewal. Educators may need to adjust their individual professional development plans as needed.
PLEASE NOTE: All educators whose licenses or permits were previously set to expire July 1, 2020, must still renew for the 2020-21 school year in accordance with their license renewal cycle. The appropriate effective date for renewal is July 1, 2020 for all licenses originally set to expire July 1, 2020. Accordingly, educators who hold renewable one-year licenses or permits and wish to renew for the following (2021-22) school year must first renew for the 2020-21 school year.
Educators must complete their required professional development and renew their currently expiring license(s) before July 1, 2021, or an additional three semester hours of professional education coursework will be required for renewal of their expired license(s). The additional coursework requirement is not applicable to individuals renewing their pupil services licenses with verification of their active Ohio board license, nor those renewing their substitute teaching licenses, educational aide, pupil activity or adult education permits. Educators may still align their currently expiring license with another previously issued professional license.
The licensure renewal window opens January 1, 2021. Educators are encouraged to submit their renewal applications as soon as they are ready to allow adequate time for processing.
